A journey

Stephanie Delord - B(r)odraps Lumière de Tazert

Moroccan embroidery is much more than a decorative art: it's an ancestral language, a skill passed down from generation to generation, between mothers, daughters, and artisans. Through each stitch, each motif, and each thread, a story is told, that of a Morocco rich in its intertwined cultures, where the artisanal gesture becomes an act of remembrance.

Crossing influences, a wealth of styles

Moroccan motifs

Traditional Moroccan embroidery reflects the country's multiple identities, informed by Andalusian, Ottoman, and Berber influences. Each region has developed a distinct style :

  • Fez embroidery, refined and symmetrical, is distinguished by its famous reversible stitch, the Fez stitch, made with silk thread. Used on linen or cotton, this technique offers a perfect finish on both sides of the fabric.

  • Rabat embroidery, more colorful, combines floral motifs with large and visible stitches, often done on white canvas.

  • The braderie of Tetouan and Chefchaouen, very influenced by the Andalusian heritage, this embroidery plays on geometric patterns, often in red or blue, embroidered on natural linen .

Symbols that speak

Moroccan embroidery is also a visual language, where each shape has a meaning. It often features:

  • The star or the diamond: symbol of fertility or protection

  • The stylized palm tree: a sign of abundance and life

  • Arabesques: evocation of the sacred or the infinite

  • Repetitive lines: ritual, balance and harmony

These embroidered symbols tell the story of women's lives, their spirituality, their connection to the land, the seasons and the community .
